Modern slavery bill is ‘lost opportunity’, says human trafficking adviser – The Guardian

‘The government’s modern slavery bill is a “lost opportunity,” the home secretary’s former special envoy for human trafficking has warned. Anthony Steen, who advised on the legislation and chairs the Human Trafficking Foundation, said the bill, which will be debated in parliament on Tuesday for its third reading, had “yawning gaps”, and failed to focus on the needs of victims of trafficking in the UK.’

With the Scottish referendum dominating the headlines last month, the introduction of the new Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014 (“the Act”) has been somewhat overshadowed. However, fanfare or no fanfare, the Act is coming into force this month (in the main) on 20 October 2014. The Act not only marks the end of the “ASBO” but also introduces new, important powers aimed at “putting the victim first”. These powers are only useful, however, if people know about them.

Police alerted two years ago over Essex teacher who had indecent images – The Guardian

‘Police have been accused of a series of failings that left a deputy headmaster free for two years to secretly film pupils undressing using cameras hidden in an Essex school’s changing rooms. Scores of indecent images of boys aged nine to 12 were found at the home of Martin Goldberg, 46, a maths teacher at Thorpe Hall school in Southend, who took his own life this month after being visited by detectives.’
