“A jealous husband has been cleared of murdering his wife with a prohibited firearm after learning of her secret affair with another man.”
The Guardian, 12th July 2012
There is a major issue here in the area of criminal responsibility. Whilst the press has played up the alleged ‘fact’ that some anti-depressant medications can lead to pseudo-psychotic symptoms & rage behaviour the reality is that the research evidence is open to doubt as other interpretations are possible. In many years practice as a Forensic Psychologist in the NHS I have never come across this as a realistic defence, though many have tried following its publication in the press. I remain sceptical, not least because research has shown that over 50%; erring on the conservative side, of claims of mental health issues by alleged criminals on remand are fake.
